Project Title: Implementation of a PRRSV Strain Database

Institution: University of Minnesota

Outcome/Results: A PRRS strain database has been constructed and is now available for public use.

In an effort to disseminate information concerning the sequence diversity of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus to a wide audience, an electronic database containing predominately one genomic region (ORF5) was developed. This database now includes over 5410 PRRSV ORF5 sequences generated mostly from PRRSV field isolate submission to the Minnesota Diagnostic Laboratory. Developed with key personnel from the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, the Center for Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics, and the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the PRRSV Database is available for viewing at the website http://prrsv.ahc.umn.edu. The nucleotide sequences are listed along with pertinent data, such as the geographic state or country of isolation, the year of isolation, the restriction fragment length polymorphism “cut” pattern, and the percent identity to available modified-live vaccines. The database can be searched by a number of selected parameters. In addition, an evolutionary profile of nucleotide sequences can be generated.
