Project Title: PCR-on-a-Chip for the Identification and Control of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus

Institution: University of Missouri-Columbia

Outcome/Results: Progress is being made toward the development of a new type of field unit to test PRRS virus. This device will speed up and simplify PRRSv detection.

Summary: We have been working on the development of a DNA assay with the goal to quickly identify the introduction of PRRSv in pig herds in order to eliminate the transmission and spread of the virus. We have successfully designed and fabricated the components. Research into more durable specific components is needed in order to fabricate a field unit. Developing and combining all the individual components is an important step towards the completion of an inexpensive test device for fast and accurate identification of PRRS virus that has potential for field applications.
