PRRS CAP Milestones and Accomplishments

Selected Accomplishments During the Second Year Include:
  • The 2010 International PRRS Symposium (IPRRSS) 2010, which hosted 277 registered participants from 23 countries and 80 abstracts.

  • Publication of “Terminology for classifying swine herds by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus status” in 2011, January-February issue of JSHAP (Hotlkamp et al.).

  • Approximately $900K of USDA funding devoted to research projects in immunology, vaccinology, epidemiology, ecology, and host genetics.

  • Support for seven regional elimination projects, located in Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Pennsylvania. Projects included significant leveraging.

  • Almost $5 million dollars leveraged for the support of CAP activities. Sources of leveraging were from universities, the National Pork Board, the federal government, private companies, Canada and individuals.

  • Workshops on regional elimination at Leman and AASV conferences.

  • Preparation of a special issue on PRRS for Virus Research: Progress in PRRSV biology and control, Lunney and Rowland, eds.

  • Recognition to Fernando Osorio for the paper, Vu et al. 2011, “Immune Evasion of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus through Glycan Shielding Involves both Glycoprotein 5 as Well as Glycoprotein 3,” as a Journal of Virology “Spotlight” feature.

  • An additional $1.3 million from Genome Canada and Genome Alberta in support of the PRRS Host Genetics Consortium.

  • Support for graduate students participating in PRRS research.

  • Twenty-six travel fellowships for students and presenters to attend PRRS-related national and international scientific meetings.

  • Support for the 2010 EuroPRRSnet meeting in Warsaw, Poland; XIIth Nidovirus Symposium in Traverse City, Michigan; Leman Swine Conference in St Paul, Minnesota and PRRS CAP/NPB Stakeholder meeting on PRRS Regional Control and Elimination. 
 Selected Accomplishments During the First Year Include:
  • Almost $900K devoted to research projects in immunology, vaccinology, epidemiology, ecology and host genetics, including the renewal of four projects
  • Support for the 2009 and 2010 International PRRS Symposium, including the creation of a fellowship program that supported five non-U.S. Ph.D. students and continuing education credits for veterinarians
  • Initiation and funding support for regional elimination projects in Michigan, Northern Minnesota, and Western Illinois
  • Support for biosecurity tools, such PADRAP
  • Creation of a set of common definitions that describe the PRRSV status of a herd
  • Almost $50K awarded for the education of graduate and minority students 
  • Over $3 million dollars leveraged in support of CAP activities. Sources of leveraging were from universities, the National Pork Board, the federal government, private companies and individuals
  • Launch of the new website, www.PRRS.org
  • Delivery of workshops on diagnostics and regional elimination
  • Support for the PRRS Host Genetics Consortium, a first of its kind project to study the role of host genetics 
  • Support for the NPB/CAP/AFRI principal investigator’s research conference
