Extension activities of the PRRS CAP are placed under Objective 4 of the PRRS CAP project proposal: To develop innovative approaches to on farm control and elimination of PRRSV and identify factors associated with success and barriers to progress.

There is no proposal submission deadline. Proposals are solicited for on the farm projects that are directed at the eventual elimination of PRRSV from specified areas; i.e. regional virus elimination.
The format for proposals is up to 5 pages and include the following headings:
- Goals of the project
- Approximate number and size of swine operations and sites in the region, including involvement of exhibition pigs
- Perceived number of sites introducing pigs from outside the region and the PRRS status of these pigs
- Perceived willingness of participants to share PRRS status and signed consent a form
- Suspected PRRS status of sites and recent clinical activity of PRRS
- Number of veterinarians servicing the area and the interaction of veterinarians with producers, including perceived leadership
- Description of the proposed program
- Time line
- How “success” will be assessed and likelihood of achieving success
- Any incorporation of innovative ideas and methods and
- Budget
A successfully funded program would be expected to include:
- Regular (at least quarterly) meetings with all participating veterinarians and producers
- Educational efforts and
- Willingness to participate in quarterly web-based meetings to share observations and experiences among participating regions.
Quarterly progress reports will be required for each area with details on number of producers involved, change in PRRS status, herd costs of controlling or eliminating PRRS, attitude of producers involved, and a summary of recent accomplishments and current challenges. If possible, include an analysis of the economic impact of PRRS elimination on individual farms. The budget should include funds being requested as well as funds available from other sources. Each funded project will be eligible for annual renewal.
